General principles of ecological restoration monitoring
Effective: it must “re-establish and maintain the values of the protected area”
Efficient: it must “maximize beneficial outcomes while minimizing costs in time, resources and effort”
Engaging: it must collaborate with partners and stakeholders, promote participation and enhance visitor experience
Methodology of ecosystem evaluation
To define the goals of ecological restoration and delimit the protected areas, we have:
- Defined the conservation state of the ecosystem (we have evaluate to what extent it is degraded and needs to be restored);
- Defined the reference ecosystem;
- Evaluated the conservation state of the current ecosystem in comparison with the reference ecosystem.
The conservation state of each habitat is qualitatively evaluated by a scale of 4 status:
Favourable
Inadequate
Unfavourable
Unknown
